Illustrative example
A York family needed to make their father's kitchen and hallway usable again.
This example shows how we approach this kind of work. It is not a specific client, and no identifying details are ever shared without consent.
- The situation
- An older man living alone had gradually lost the use of his kitchen and the hallway had narrowed to a single path. His son and daughter live outside York and were worried about falls and about his heating, which needed servicing.
- The family's priorities
- Keep their father involved and in charge of decisions. Make the kitchen safe to cook in and clear a proper route from the front door to the stairs, in time for the heating engineer's visit.
- What was kept
- Family photographs, his late wife's recipe books, paperwork and anything he wanted to keep. Everything else he was unsure about went into labelled boxes for him to look through later, rather than being thrown away.
- What was removed
- Out-of-date food, packaging, broken appliances and items he agreed could go. Furniture in good condition was offered for reuse locally.
- How we worked
- Short sessions over three days, with the same small team each time. Nothing left the house without his agreement, and the family were updated at the end of each day.
- The result
- A working kitchen, a clear and safe hallway, and a boiler service that could finally go ahead. The rest of the house was left for a later, gentler stage at his pace.
